Why, How and What of Thoracic Surgical Procedure
Thoracic means the organs in the chest like the heart, lungs, and esophagus. So, coronary artery bypass surgery, heart transplant, lung transplant, and removal of parts of the lung due to cancer all come under thoracic surgery.
Thoracic surgery or chest surgery and treatment helps in the diagnosis & cure of lungs dealing with cancer, trauma, or pulmonary disease. The only difference is in the case of lung cancer nodules, tumors, and lymph nodes are removed to diagnose, find out the stage, and treat the disease.
Thoracic surgery procedures
1. Thoracotomy procedures
It is an open procedure where an entire lung or a large portion can be removed. It is chosen when a large part of the lung or inner chest cavity needs to be seen. Procedure details for thoracotomy when lung cancer is the reason for surgical procedure being conducted with one of the following procedures:
• Wedge Resection - Tumor and tissue surrounding the cancer are removed in this procedure.
• Anatomical segmental resection- Tumor, vessels, lymphatic drainage, and the lung segment where the tumor is present are removed.
• Lobectomy - Entire lobe of the lung having cancer, including the lymph nodes are removed.
• Pneumonectomy - Lung with the lymph nodes are removed.
• Pleurectomy - Inner lining of the chest cavity is removed.
2. Minimally invasive procedures
As the name suggests the body is not open in fact surgery is performed through one or more small incisions.
• Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) – Here, a long thin tube with a camera called a thoracoscope is sent through an incision in the chest. The camera helps to guide the surgeon by sending video to the monitor.
• Robotic thoracic surgery –Just like VAT cameras will be used. But surgery will be performed robotically. Although all will be controlled and operated by the surgeon through a console. Inside special instruments will be working as the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger.
Although we have few doctors who only specialize to perform such advanced procedures like vascular surgeons in Delhi. One of those few experts is Dr. Amit Chaudhary – Associate director of Asian Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Asian Hospital, Faridabad with more than 18 years of experience.
